Description

This painting offers a visual reflection on the key events and cultural atmosphere of 2022. Central to the composition is a reference to the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine, symbolized through imagery inspired by the graphic novel Maus—a book that was controversially banned in some school districts. In Maus, the Holocaust is depicted with mice representing Jews and cats as Germans. In my interpretation, the mice represent the Ukrainian people, and the cats symbolize the Russian aggressors.

A monkey figure appears in the piece, representing both the Monkeypox outbreak and the classified documents scandal involving Donald Trump. Other major themes include the tragic Uvalde school shooting, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the anticipated “Red Wave” in the midterm elections that failed to materialize, and the increasingly blurred lines between church and state.

The work also serves as a tribute to the many prominent figures lost in 2022. Through this collage of imagery and symbolism, the painting captures the tension, loss, and resilience that defined the year.
